Why does LSS exist?

Many international student organisations, representing various backgrounds and disciplines, often share similar goals to improve the skills of their leaders, knowledge transfer, continuity and internal communication.

The Leadership Summer School project was born to fulfil perceived needs related to development and/or improvement of their training culture, leaders readiness to manage their organisation and networking with diverse youth associations. This interdisciplinary event became a training platform for active youth volunteers.

When and Where?

Near Sofia (Bulgaria) from July 21th to July 30th 2013.

What is the Unreasonable Time?

It’s October 11th 2010, a day when an idea has been sent to me from Zero Generation… Next to a vimeo link to a nebulous Unreasonable Institute project, came the question: “What can we do with all the talents we collate?
The mail was sent at 6:15 AM by the way.

More than my words, I think they are the best to explain who they are, what they do and why they do it.

Unreasonable Institute

Later on, October 11th 2010, 10:40 AM, I posted this: Thx to @salmaansana I disovered today the Unreasonable Institute (http://ht.ly/2RvVh ) on Episode 1! Awesome concept!

After many discussions, exchanges, a lot of time, and in our quest to develop and enhance the LSS learning experience, an idea about an activity has been submitted for the edition 2012: The Unreasonable Time.

The Unreasonable Time is an opportunity for LSS participants to actively make use of the network of LSS, which sometimes happened in the past, on a more sustainable way.

LSS attracting over 60 ppl from different profiles from 25 different Organisations from a dozen field of higher education in Europe and the world.

We would unite them, trained in a similar location for 10 days, given time to develop solutions that could impact many.

Instead of mentoring, we could facilitate the process by providing a frame and feedback to their ideas.

Trainers would help participants not only in realisation, also in building and strengthening their ideas along with all LSS actors.”

All that said, the idea has been presented before the event, inviting participants to bring (im)possible ideas for collective implementation and, throughout the event, 1 hour was daily allocated for group work development.

I’ve failed over, over and over again in my life that is why I succeeded.” Michael Jordan

As you can imagine, it didn’t work out as we planned:
– No responsible was initially attached to the activity as this was meant to be a free and uncoordinated time
– Low level of participation at first
– Frustration raising from the ones interested though not supported
– The follow up on the idea is very weak

Though, by failing fast, we managed to get the idea back on track.

filipe pereira lss2012 trainerFilipe Pereira, our Entrepreneur minded Trainer, took over to facilitate the process. He took part of the daily check-in of the Unreasonable Time.

Participants also took their part in by providing themes for the different Unreasonable Time: Open Space Technology, LSSx2, NGO Cooperation.

Together, trainers and participants organised and took part in a full day Project Creation Workshop (illustrated below) during which over 100 ideas were generated, about 20 of them were refined and made it through to a Business Model draft. By the day of today, a dozen have raised interest. As mentioned before, follow up should be improved.

project-creation-workshop-lss2012

We are still following the Unreasonable Institute project, learning from its failures as well as its numerous results and impacts. We will combine them with our own and improve the actionability of LSS actors ideas fulfilling one of the fundamental objective of the Leadership Summer School Project: to set an environment and a frame in which the organisation’s members will network and uncover possible new or better ways of cooperation.

If given the opportunity, would you join us?

LSS 2013 Organising Committee

As announced on 29/01/2013, the Leadership Summer School is moving forward for its 2013 edition. This year, the event is going to be held in Bulgaria, organised by AEGEE Sofia and associates!

AEGEE-Sofia

AEGEE-Sofia is an organisation with traditions and huge experience in organizing international events. Their aim is to be essential part in youth’s life in Bulgaria and all over Europe. Organising Leadership Summer School is important because we strongly believe that it will improve our organisational skills and it will be more than one step forward for us. This event gives us changes that will enlarge our view, our values and open our eyes to foster actions for a better future, because our future competency will be fostered by today’s changes that we make.

Cafer Saatchi

Leadership is a journey, not a destination. This could be said for the foreign languages. The phrase ‘to learn a language’ does not exist. Always in front of you there are new opportunities to discover more and more from the magic world of foreign language, to sink deeper and deeper in its charming secrets.
But actually the goal is to start using the language, speaking it or being confident in communication. This is how we see LSS and why we consider it important and life changing. Let us create your journey.

Cafer Saatchi, OC President

You are thus invited to check your agendas, craft your motivation and explore potential routes as this Summer, you will be expected around Sofia!

Leadership Today

Steve Mellau @LSS 2012On July 8th 2012, Opening Ceremony of LSS 2012 in Budapest welcomed Steve Mellau as guest Speaker. Steve Mellau is Executive Coach of HRO Consulting, Senior Trainer and Visiting Professor at Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade. He spoke about Leadership and the importance for young people to learn Leadership related skills during studies or at the dawn of their professional careers.

Steve’s keywords according to leadership or every life situation are: questioning and listening. The talk was thus open for questions, opportunity used by one of the participants to ask: “what is the most important Leadership skill?”
Before answering, our Speaker bounced back the question to the audience. We heard elements such as Communication, Motivation, Presentation skills, Persuasion, Planning… Then came his answer: “Influence!” Steve’s sentence was close to the quote from Kenneth Blanchard illustrated on the picture opening this post.

Compiling several dictionaries, influence is defined as the power to affect persons or events without apparent exertion of force or direct exercise of command. Influence must have some effects on people and/or events, inducing a change in actions, feelings, thoughts and sometimes beliefs.

When starting a career, one is expecting to be the listener, to learn fast, to ask questions, sometimes, though not much to question what is requested from hierarchy. This is normal in most places though how long the status of “freshman” or “newbie” should last? There will be time when one will have suggestions, ideas or proposals to submit while not having the hierarchical clearance to implement them. How to make your superiors, colleagues, clients follow you?

There are many elements related to influencing others. Influence is about change as the people or the chain of events affected will be in a different setting than initially planned. One should also take into account who is the audience, what is the current context in your unit, department or company. It is also about persuasion; suggested course of actions work in audience/company’s best interest first. To influence someone and lead a group to a place members may not have gone by themselves, one must improve communication and understanding; one must win their adhesion. Relationship will be stronger if a group is lead without being commanded or forced.

This specific question and answer opened the door for participants to take full advantage of the project with practical testing and application throughout the event with inputs from trainers, peers and supporting companies.
